Overview

PFM is currently seeking a Business Developer / Relationship Manager to assist with new business development and client management for its investment advisory practice in Illinois. The role will work from our Chicago, IL office, and affords the successful candidate an opportunity to work closely with the region's Managing Director and other seasoned professionals. Individuals interested in this role should possess strong interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, highly organized and have demonstrated success working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

 

FIRM OVERVIEW

PFM’s investment management practice, PFM Asset Management LLC (PFMAM), is a privately-held, registered investment advisor. PFMAM is among the largest investment-grade fixed-income managers in the United States and provides cash management, investment management and consulting services to local governments and other tax-exempt institutions. As of March 31, 2017, PFM's assets under management have grown to $118.7 billion in total assets, including $77.3 billion in discretionary assets under management and $41.4 billion in non-discretionary assets under advisement. PFM’s Illinois asset management practice, established in 2002, has over $1 billion in assets under management and approximately 175 clients.

 

PFMAM specializes in managing investments for clients in the government, insurance, healthcare, higher education and other institutional sectors.  The firm manages short and intermediate term fixed income assets for operating funds, reserve funds, and bond proceeds, as well as longer-term multi-asset class portfolios for pension funds, OPEB trusts and endowments/foundations. PFM also serves as investment advisor and marketing agent for The Illinois Trust, the Illinois Statewide Investment Program.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and expand our the short-term fixed-income business while maintaining existing relationships with investment management clients (primarily public agencies);
  • Collaborate with senior team members in all aspects of marketing , sales and client management; including but not limited to managing existing client relationships, preparing for and attending meetings, and ensuring appropriate follow up with clients and targets
  • Account Development (existing and new clients) - Develop direct customer relationships with key accounts and identify and develop relationships within those accounts with key decision making personnel
  • Presentations and Networking - Prepare presentations for prospective customers, and conferences which demonstrate the advantages, products, services, and capabilities of the firm
  • Work with our Client Service Group, accounting and trading desk to ensure smooth implementation of new clients and fulfilling the needs of current clients
  • Coordinate information flow between staff, clients, and PFM project and product managers on a regular basis;
  • Coordinate preparation of client reports and other written communications;
  • Present reports and other materials to clients at meetings;
  • Analyze various options to come up with optimal investment solutions for our clients;
  • Create innovative ways of educating clients and prospects on current market events and investment opportunities; and,

Support other sales, marketing and service activities as appropriate, included the pooled programs.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants should have client-facing work experience, knowledge and/or interest in the institutional fixed income investment market, and experience working in or with public sector and other institutional investors.

 

Required / desired skills and experience include:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Current CFA Charterholder or progression towards the CFA certification is a plus (but not required).
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in government administration, relationship management or business development, preferably within the public sector/municipal finance, or in the banking, investment management, trust or financial services arenas.
  • Current, active Series 6 & 63 certifications (or the equivalent licensing) are desired, or must be willing to obtain as a requirement of continued employment in this role.
  • Knowledge of fixed income funds, short and intermediate term fixed income investments, and money market instruments.
  • Independent, self-motivated, and proactive, with a desire to succeed and to develop within the firm as well as grow revenue for the Midwest region.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Develops effective written correspondence. Actively listens to others. Effectively builds relationships with customers, superiors and colleagues. Ability to operate successfully in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to a changing, fast-paced environment.

  • Location / travelRegular travel (primarily within the Illinois) is a requirement of this position. When not traveling, this person will work from the Chicago, IL office.

 

COMPENSATION

Compensation includes a competitive base salary, bonus eligibility, and comprehensive benefits package. PFM also offers the option for participation in profit sharing and 401K plans.
